Over $2 million has been raised so far for the family of slain NYPD Officer Jonathan Diller, an outpouring of generosity from everyday people to billionaires horrified by the tragedy — and fed up with the broken criminal justice system and anti-cop politicians.
“I think people are starting to get angry,” said Gristedes and D’Agostino supermarkets CEO John Catsimatidis, who chairs the Federal Law Enforcement Foundation that gave $10,000 directly to the Diller family.
“They’re starting to realize the legislators are not doing their jobs to protect the people. And that’s why we’re seeing so much money for the Diller family.”
Among the top givers are:
Barstool sports founder Dave Portnoy, who promised to match the staggering $750,000 raised for Diller’s 1-year-old son Ryan and his widow, Stephanie, 29, through his website’s store — for a total of $1.5 million.
A GoFundMe set up for the Diller family by a member of the NYPD Scuba team, which has brought in over $700,000 in four days from 9,500 donors.
The New York Police and Fire Widows’ and Children’s Benefit Fund, which will provide an initial $50,000 to Stephanie Diller plus an annual stipend of $10,000 for the rest of her life.
The Tunnel to Towers Foundation, started by the family of 9/11 Firefighter Stephen Siller, which promised to cover the mortgage on Diller’s Massapequa Park home.
COPSHOT, which offers a $10,000 reward for information leading to arrest and conviction of cop killers, donated the bounty for Diller’s shooter to cover the college tuition for the murdered cop’s son.
The Silver Shield Foundation, which provides scholarships to the children of fallen officers, said it received well over 100 contributions in a single day to support Diller’s family and more are rolling in.
Silver Shield co-chair Howard Lorber thanked The Post for alerting readers to its mission.
“We appreciate The Post for what it does. Once they talk about it, that’s what helps people with knowing what we do,” Lorber said.
“People of the city, they feel bad for this officer that’s so young, that went out there, put his life on the line, was doing this job, and winds up getting shot,” said COPSHOT chairman John Provetto. “When something like this happens, it’s a hit at everyone.”
The 31-year-old cop with just three years on the job was fatally gunned down during a routine traffic stop that escalated into a shootout in Far Rockaway, Queens, on Monday.
Career criminal Guy Rivera, 34, refused to leave an illegally parked career before allegedly firing a bullet into Diller’s stomach beneath his protective vest.
Despite being mortally wounded, Diller managed to grab Rivera’s gun after it hit the pavement.
The officer’s partner fired two shots, at least one of which hit Rivera in the back, according to police.
Rivera, who had 21 prior arrests, is facing murder, attempted murder and weapons possession charges for Diller’s killing. Ex-con Lindy Jones, 41, who was behind the wheel of the illegally parked car, was arrested and also slapped with weapon possession charges.
