CORVALLIS, Ore. (KOIN) — If you’ve followed this Beavers women’s basketball team over the years, you know the name Deven Hunter.

She was part of the Oregon State team that went to the Final Four in 2016 and started 132 of the 135 games she played in in her OSU career.

The Keizer native rejoined the team as an assistant coach two years ago and has brought her own unique flair to the Beavs sideline.

A flair that is truly one of one.

Asked if she ran into any other basketball coach that made their own clothes, Hunter said, “Not that I know of, but there probably is a few out there, but, no I haven’t.”

Hunter entered college at OSU wanting to be an athletic trainer but found out quickly that chemistry wasn’t her thing.

The next thing she picked up: A sewing machine.

“I think it’s super fun to say that you’ve made something,” said Hunter. “Knowing you can do it yourself is super cool.”

Hunter eventually graduated, majoring in apparel design.

After playing a few years abroad, she got into coaching and wasn’t really using her degree.

Then COVID hit and Hunter needed to pass the time. That’s when she rediscovered sewing. However, last season was the first time she made clothes for herself.

She said “100%, it definitely is” helpful having a non-basketball outlet in season. “I go home, and I need to just relax for a little while. I can get lost in sewing for 2-3 hours and not realize what time it is, so it definitely is a good stress reliever.”

Next year Hunter hopes to make clothes for the players on her team.

Is there anything else up her sleeve for herself for this NCAA Tournament run?

“We’ll see. I was working on one thing. I finished it last night. It didn’t really fit really very well. We do have some time until our first game, so we’ll see what happens if I find some free time,” she said.
