New Orleans City Council announces preparation of ‘back-up plan’ for possible state removal of summer EBT

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The New Orleans City Council has announced its preparations for a “back-up plan” if summer EBT is not administered by the state.

According to a news release from New Orleans City Council President Helena Moreno, the council, the New Orleans Health Department and Second Harvest Food Bank will “begin work to allocate $1M to boost resources at Second Harvest Food Bank to help provide food to more than ten thousand families in need.”

The allocation will be considered at the Budget Committee meeting on Thursday, April 25. If passed at that meeting, it will be voted on at a later city council meeting should the plan be deemed necessary.

In February, Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry’s administration announced the state is opting out of the federally funded summer EBT program.

Since the announcement, local businesses and nonprofits have been responding.

Wednesday’s news release states while the Louisiana legislature is funding the program for 2024, “the question remains whether the State, even though funding will likely be available, will administer the program this summer.”

According to the release, there will be two fundraising events hosted by Moreno local business owners, musicians and community organizers.

The first event will be held on Wednesday, May 1, at Nonno’s at 5:30 p.m. For more information and registration, visit the event RSVP page.
