“The child’s mother reported that while shopping, she lost sight of her daughter and found the 3-year-old in Mikel’s arms,” police said. “The mother confronted the unknown suspect, who put the child down and fled the store.”

Investigators said forensic evidence showed that the girl “had been harmed in the encounter.”

On April 19, a grand jury in Marion County indicted Mikal for first-degree attempted unlawful sexual penetration, first-degree sex abuse and first-degree attempted kidnapping.

During the investigation, however, Mikel fled to Minooka, Ill. where he was arrested by the FBI, officials said. His extradition to Oregon is currently in progress.
