One dead in Jackson after Thursday night shooting on Jefferson Street

One person died after a Thursday night shooting in the Belhaven area, according to a Capitol Police statement.

Bailey Martin, with the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, said in a Friday morning statement that officers responded to a call around 11:15 p.m. Thursday about a deceased subject on Jefferson Street.

The unnamed person "suffered from an apparent gunshot wound," Bailey said in the statement.

No suspect identification, nor a motive for the killing, has been released by police.

"Officers are actively investigating this matter and gathering evidence," the statement reads. "Due to this being an open and active investigation, no further comment will be made at this time.”
