Here’s who is — and is not — on the local ballots Aug. 6

UPDATE: This report has been updated to include the list of candidates filed in Shiawassee County.

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Filing deadline to appear on the Aug. 6, 2024 primary ballot was 4 p.m. today.

6 News has been reaching out to local county clerks to get you the most up to date information on who has — has not filed — for offices throughout mid-Michigan.

To find out who filed for state house and statewide court positions, visit the Michigan Secretary of State website here.

Michigan State University Professor Matt Grossmann tells 6 News some of the empty contests raise an eyebrow. For instance in Ingham County’s Wheatfield Township, no one filed to run for Clerk or for the two, four-year terms as Trustee on the ballot.

“Well, when you have so many offices that are elected, there’s bound to be some that are either uncontested or that no one jumps in for,” he says. “But it is definitely not the norm to have seats open that no one is contesting at all, and even partisan choices that are likely to be won by one party usually see at least some level of competition.”

Jackson County

A surprise in today’s filings. Current Prosecutor Jerard M. Jarzynka did not file for re-election to the post. Instead, two Republicans have filed for the post. No Democrat filed.

While no candidates appear on the list here for elected positions in both Parma and Pulaski Townships, Jackson County Clerk Cierra Sowle tells 6 News the township clerks have until April 29 to provide the names of qualified candidates who met the 4 p.m. deadline.

Ingham County

In Meridian Township, the disqualification of current Democratic Clerk Deborah Guthrie from the ballot led to four candidates filing — three Democrats and one Republican. Guthrie withdrew her write candidacy on Friday. Angela Demas, a December 2023 graduate of MSU, filed April 15. Mike McCurdy filed later in the week. Sometime after 1 p.m. today, former Ingham County Commissioner Emily Stivers filed as a Democrat for the Clerk position and Republican Patty McPhee filed for the Republican nomination.

Current Meridian Township Supervisor Patricia Herring Jackson did not file for re-election. Current Supervisor Pro Tem Scott Hendrickson withdrew his candidacy for trustee last week, and filed to run as supervisor.

Current Trustees Kathy Ann Sundland, Marna Wilson and Peter L. Trezise all filed as Democrats. Roger Taylor and Nickolas Lentz filed as Democrats for the four positions up for election this year. Former Trustee Milton Scales filed to run for trustee.
