EVANSTON, Ill. — A North Chicago man accused of sexually assaulting a woman near Northwestern’s Evanston campus is now facing a felony charge.

According to Evanston police, 26-year-old Carlos Scott has been charged with 1 felony count of criminal sexual abuse by force.

Authorities say the charge stems from Scott’s alleged role in the sexual assault of a 20-year-old woman in late February.

Police say it allegedly unfolded at around 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 27, in the 800 block of Noyes Street in Evanston, less than a mile from Northwestern’s campus.

The victim was entering her residence in the area when police say Scott allegedly approached her while she was in a stairwell of her building.

According to police, Scott then allegedly grabbed the victim from behind, covered her mouth and groped her.

Officers say the victim happened to be on the phone with a friend at the time of the alleged attack and they came to her aid. When the friend arrived, Scott allegedly fled the scene.

The woman suffered minor scratches during the alleged attack.

Police say the victim reported the incident to officers who responded to the scene and were able to recover surveillance footage that captured images of the suspect.

Authorities shared the images with local law enforcement and a member of the Northwestern University Police Department was able to identify the suspect as Scott.
