Nashville Police: Saturday morning shooting leaves one dead, one injured

Nashville police are investigating a Saturday morning shooting that left one person dead and injured another.

The shooting happened around 2:30 a.m. Saturday in an alleyway between Hayes and Church Streets in the Midtown area of Nashville. The victims were 32-year-old Christopher Cheeks, who died, and a 29-year-old man, who was shot but survived.

The 29-year-old man told police he was with Cheeks and several other friends in the alleyway when three other suspects approached the group and attempted to rob them. The 29-year-old said he was struck by gunfire and his group of friends, including himself and Cheeks, ran in different directions.

The 29-year-old was located on Church Street and was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for treatment.

Cheeks was located in the parking garage of the Hayes Street Hotel. He was transported to Vanderbilt, where he died. No one else was struck by the gunfire, according to police.
