Myrtle Beach Pelicans preparing for 25th season on the Grand Strand; opening night is Friday

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — The Myrtle Beach Pelicans opening night is Friday, and the crew is excited to see fans in the stadium again.

The Pelicans are celebrating their 25th season on the Grand Strand this year and recently unveiled a new logo.

Assistant General Manager Hunter Horenstein explains more about the logo and the history behind it.

“Obviously the use of a diamond, baseball diamond, as the centerpiece, it shows the Pelican head logo, which is really a favorite of ours,” Horenstein said. “The four stars represent the four championships, and then it’s got some of the beach touch in there as well, and, just a really clean, classic logo, and we’re excited to unveil it and excited for people to see it at the ballpark as well.”

As workers ready Pelicans Ballpark for fans, Horenstein said the entire organization is ready to welcome back the crowds.

“It’s always great to have our game day staff come back into town, come back to the ballpark, and people are running around the ballpark getting ready to go, everything, all the last minute details are getting done, and that’s exciting,” he said. “It kind of energizes you. We’ve got beautiful weather out this week. It should be a lot of fun. We’re really looking forward to it.”

Horenstein said preparations for opening day start before the previous season ends, and it is all hands on deck.

“The work kind of starts, really, before the last game of the previous season even is played, but it’s exciting,” he said. “All the work coming to fruition like this, and this is just kind of the start of it. Opening day is obviously a really big day, and really exciting for Game 1, but we’ve got a few more months after that as well with 66 home games, and so we’re looking forward to a really great season.”

The Pelicans are planning post-game celebrations, too.

“Postgame fireworks, pregame autograph sessions will be back,” Horenstein said. “It’s our Family Friday, our first Family Friday of the night, too, so the family Friday food special will be available. Kids run the bases after the fireworks, and then that just rolls into the weekend. So [it’s] just a lot of fun to finally get this thing going and get this season underway.”

You can meet the team from 6 p.m. to 730 p.m. Wednesday at Riptydz restaurant on N. Ocean Boulevard in Myrtle Beach. The Pelicans will be playing the Fayetteville Woodpeckers starting at 7:05 p.m. Friday.
