Murrells Inlet jeweler honoring husband through living organ donor event
MURRELLS INLET, S.C. (WBTW) — A Murrells Inlet business is celebrating its anniversary by raising awareness for living organ donations.
Shug’s By The Inlet off Highway 17 was started in 2013 by owner Cindy Sellers. Just a year later, after donating a kidney to her husband, she also started the nonprofit group “Shug in Memory of Jerry Sellers.”
Sellers’ husband died less than a year later from cancer and she now uses her business as a platform in his memory. The anniversary celebration will be from noon until 5 p.m. on April 11 at her store.
Sellers said a portion of the proceeds will go toward advocating for and supporting living organ donation. She says there will also be food, sweets and giveaways.
Sellers hopes to be able to share her passion with the community.
“Just educating people,” she said. “Pointing the patient or the donor in the right direction is what I do, and of course with my jewelry, that’s just my platform to say, ‘hey, when you’re buying a piece of jewelry from Shug’s, you are contributing to a higher, better cause.'”
