Video: Murder suspect lights himself on fire before Akron police take him into custody

AKRON, Ohio (WJW) — A man is in custody after lighting himself on fire during a traffic stop in Akron Monday morning, police reported.

Police were alerted Sunday night to a vehicle seen in the area that was connected to a Wyandotte, Michigan, homicide. The vehicle, a blue Hyundai Tucson, was once more caught on camera Monday and police initiated a traffic stop around 11 a.m. at a beauty supply parking lot on Copley Road. Police said the driver of the vehicle was considered a person of interest in the case.

Approaching the vehicle cautiously, police said they saw the 59-year-old man was holding a knife. They told him to drop the weapon and step outside.

Instead, the suspect reportedly set himself on fire and then jumped out of the car.

According to a report, police said they were able to put the flames out with a fire extinguisher and the man was taken into custody.

The man was taken to the hospital for his burns, but police said his injuries were not considered life-threatening. An investigation is ongoing.
