MSP: 5-year-old shot, killed near Newaygo

GARFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A child was shot and killed at a home near Newaygo Monday afternoon, police say.

Around 3:25 p.m., Michigan State Police troopers were called to a home in Garfield Township for a report of a child who had been shot. They arrived to find a 5-year-old child with a gunshot wound. That child died, according to MSP Lt. Michelle Robinson.

The child was not identified by police. It is unclear how the child was able to access the gun.

MSP is investigating. Robinson said there was no threat to the public.

“Keep this family in your thoughts this evening,” Robinson said. “Any time you have any type of situation like this where a child’s life has been lost, it’s an incredible tragedy for the community … hold your children tight tonight, give them an extra hug because there is one family that is grieving right now and we need to respect their privacy right at the moment.”
