MPs have backed Rishi Sunak’s flagship smoking ban, although the Prime Minister was forced to rely on Labour votes to get his plans through.

Nearly half of Tory MPs, including five leadership hopefuls, failed to support the legislation.

A total of 165 Conservatives either abstained or voted against it, with Liz Truss warning it would not be the last ban the “health police” would wish to implement.

Kemi Badenoch, widely seen as a future candidate for the Tory leadership, voted against the Tobacco and Vapes Bill.

Other leadership hopefuls Suella Braverman and Robert Jenrick also voted against, while Penny Mordaunt and Priti Patel abstained.
