Motorcyclist dies more than 2 weeks after DUI crash in south Las Vegas valley

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A motorcycle driver was pronounced dead more than two weeks after an alleged DUI driver crashed into him in the south Las Vegas valley, police said.

On Sunday, April 28 at around 10:50 a.m., officers with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department responded to a crash in the area of South Eastern Avenue south of East Wigwam Avenue.

Evidence at the scene and witness statements showed that a 2020 Toyota Sienna was exiting a private drive onto Eastern Avenue when it failed to yield to the right of way and crashed into a motorcycle, according to police.

The motorcyclist, identified as 33-year-old Pedro Mejia-Perez, was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, police said. On May 16, the Clark County Coroner’s Office notified police that Mejia-Perez succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead by medical personnel.

The driver of the Toyota, identified as 72-year-old David Degood, showed signs of impairment and was arrested on DUI-related charges, police said. He faces charges of DUI resulting in substantial bodily harm and failure to yield the right of way.

Degood was released on alcohol monitoring on May 13. His bail conditions are to stay out of trouble and to abstain from drugs and alcohol. His next court appearance was scheduled for July 8.
