Motorcyclist dead after crash Monday night on I-94

A motorcycle rider is dead after a crash Monday night on Interstate 94 in Wayne County, Michigan State Police said.

The incident occurred on westbound I-94 near Merriman Road in Romulus, authorities said. Calls came in to the Detroit Regional Communication Center around 11:30 p.m., reporting a motorcycle crash in the area.

Two motorcycles traveled at high speeds on I-94 when the operator of one of the motorcycles lost control and hit the freeway's concrete wall, police said, citing a preliminary investigation. The 19-year-old male rider was thrown off the motorcycle and struck a light pole. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, MSP said.

"We want to remind motorcycle operators to drive responsibly," said Lieutenant Mike Shaw. "It is important to know your riding abilities, wear a helmet and drive the speed limit when operating a motorcycle. It will help prevent crashes like this one."

Police did not publicly identify the man, though his family has been notified, MSP said.

Michigan State Police said it has concluded the on-site investigation.
