Monongahela Nation Forest conducting prescribed burn in Pocahontas County

ELKINS, W. Va. (WFXR)- The National Forest Services says the Monongahela National Forest plans to conduct prescribed burns in Pocahontas County from April 17-19.

Prescribed burns in Pocahontas County include:

  • Guinn Ridge- 1,462 acres

  • Ramshorn Ridge- 1,005 acres

The Forest Service says these prescribed burns will re-establish fire’s natural role in the forest ecosystem, improve forest and wildlife health, and reduce the threat of catastrophic wildfires.

Each burn area will be closed to the public starting on the day of the burn and may be closed for several days after. The Forest Service will provide signs on roads near the burn area before and during operations.

Residents and forest visitors may see and smell smoke for several days. The Forest Service reminds those that this is not an emergency and that if you encounter smoke on the highway, to slow down, turn on your vehicle’s lights and drive appropriately for the conditions.
