Mobile Marine Corps Veteran Gary Cooper leaves a lasting legacy

Mobile, Ala. (WKRG) — Mobile native and Marine Corps Veteran Major General Gary Cooper passed away on Saturday.

Cooper who is recognized as the first African-American Marine Corps officer to lead an infantry company into combat in Vietnam, earned two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star among other distinctions.

He graduated from McGill-Toolen High School and the University of Notre Dame. After graduating from college, Cooper joined the Marine Corps. Along with serving in Vietnam, Cooper rose through the ranks, eventually being promoted to Major General.

The Mobile native also served as Assistant Secretary for the Air Force under President George H.W. Bush. He also served as ambassador to Jamaica. Cooper was also co-founder and CEO of Commonwealth Bank.

General Gary Cooper was 87 years old.

Sony Music warns tech companies over 'unauthorized' use of its content to train AI
The letter, which was obtained by TechCrunch, says Sony Music has “reason to believe” that the recipients of the letter have “may already have made unauthorized uses” of its content. The company’s portfolio of artists includes numerous notable artists like Harry Styles, Beyoncé, Adele and Celine Dion. “We support artists and songwriters taking the lead in embracing new technologies in support of their art,” Sony Music said in a statement.

Poshmark, the social commerce site that lets people buy and sell new and used items to each other, launched a paid marketing tool on Thursday, giving sellers the ability to promote their entire shop at once. Poshmark’s new feature, called “Promoted Closet,” uses machine learning to automatically promote individual product listings from a seller's entire inventory, identifying shoppers’ search terms and matching them with promoted items. Promoted Closet works like “cost per click” models on Etsy, Amazon and Google Ads.

In 2014, Jason Frantz and Rob Woollen co-founded Sigma Computing, a platform that overlays data stored in data platforms such as Snowflake and Google BigQuery with a spreadsheet-like interface for data visualization and analytics. With Sigma, the two former software engineers sought to tackle what they perceived as the intractable data challenges faced by large corporations: unwieldy tooling and difficult-to-manage data stores. "After recognizing the huge advances in cloud data infrastructure during the past decade, Jason and Rob identified a gap in the market," Sigma Computing CEO Mike Palmer told TechCrunch in an interview.
