Mesa County Coroner’s Office issues scam call warning

MESA COUNTY, Colo. (KREX) — The Mesa County Coroner’s Office issued a scam call warning last Tuesday after a community member received a suspicious call from someone pretending to be a doctor and the owner of a local mortuary.

The individual who received the call was asked to identify a body. The Mesa County Coroner’s Office wants you to know the following about their office and processes:

If an unidentified body exists, the Mesa County Coroner’s Office will take jurisdiction over the individual. We follow a professional and thorough process to identify the body, using methods such as fingerprints, dental records, surgical implants, or DNA.

Statement on Mesa County Coroner’s Office Facebook page

What happens to unidentified bodies?

The coroner’s office stated if necessary, a representative from their office may contact suspected family to get more information about the deceased, but emphasized there are no circumstances where a family member would be asked to visually identify an individual.

The coroner’s office is responsible for identifying remains; funeral homes and mortuaries are not.

The Mesa County Coroner’s Office says if you receive a phone call asking you to identify remains, don’t trust the call and report it. If you are wondering if one of your loved ones was found deceased, email the coroner’s office at coroner@mesacounty.us.
