Meet WFLA’s 2024 Remarkable Woman winner, Hilary Stockdon

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — News Channel 8 is excited to reveal the winner of our 2024 Remarkable Women contest.

Meet this year’s Remarkable Women finalists

Late last year, more than 100 essays were submitted, nominating the most Remarkable Women in the Tampa Bay region. A panel of five judges narrowed the entries down to four contestants.

Over March, during International Women’s Month, we introduced you to our top four finalists, Laura Bray, Dr. Hilary Stockdon, Jeannie Shapiro and Tina Miller.

Just a fraction of a point separated our finalists, but only one could be named the the 2024 WFLA Remarkable Woman winner — Dr. Stockdon, a scientist with the U.S. Geological Survey based in St. Petersburg.

Stockdon is responsible for the U.S.G.S’s Coastal and Marine Hazards and Resources program. Her work helps determine risks from hazards like hurricanes, storm surge, and sea level rise along more than 95,000 miles of U.S. Coastline.

Stockdon was given $1,000 to be donated to her favorite charity, the Surfrider Foundation, a nonprofit that works to protect and preserve the world’s oceans, waves and beaches.

This weekend, Stockdon will travel to Hollywood, California to compete for the national Remarkable Woman title and a chance to win $10,000 for charity.
