Yahoo Autos The McLaren P1 LM Is the Fastest Road-Legal Car to Ever Climb the Hill at Goodwood
This past weekend, British company Lanzante debuted their road-going version of McLaren's P1 GTR, called the P1 LM, at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
The P1 LM is more or less just a P1 GTR that's been modified to drive on the street. This means it retains the bonkers 986 horsepower hybrid twin-turbo V8 powertrain, but tuned to run on regular pump gas. They were able to keep the power level the same by simply turning the boost up.
The modifications don't end there. The British firm installs a new exhaust system, replaces the glass windows for plastic ones, adds road-ready wheels and tires, deletes the air jack system, and utilizes carbon fiber and alcantara throughout the cabin. They've even lined the engine bay in gold to pay homage to the F1, Mclarens first road-legal car. All of these changes result in an almost 130 lb weight loss from the already lightweight GTR. Lanzante states that there will only be six units produced, and they'll cost around $3.96 million dollars to build.
Swedish driver Kenny Bräck was at the wheel of this P1 LM when he set the record. Although it has a license plate on the back, it's far from your average sports car. The suspension is extremely tight, the wings produce downforce, and the speed is otherworldly. It is truly a racecar for the road, and the 47.07 time reflects that. It was the second-fastest car overall at the shootout this year, beating several purpose-built hillclimb racecars.
