May travelers break travel records, make TSA history

ARLINGTON COUNTY, Va. (DC News Now) — The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) said five days in May alone broke its top 20 busiest travel days in its history.

They expect Memorial Day weekend to break similar records.

At Regan National Airport, TSA expects to screen about 8,000 more travelers per day for the holiday weekend than on an average weekend – a 10% increase from last year.

TSA expects a similar spike at Dulles International Airport, with 39,000 passengers predicted to travel on Thursday and Friday. 34,000 people are expected to travel on Sunday alone – a 12% increase from last year.

“I just wanted to get out of town,” said passenger Zack Schneider. “I didn’t know it was going to be this busy to be honest or I would’ve gotten here earlier.”

TSA advises passengers to arrive at the airport early and be prepared to go through the checkpoint screening.

Passengers are also encouraged to check the “What can I bring?” feature on the TSA website to make sure you don’t bring a prohibited item and hold up the checkpoints.

For those hitting the roads, the Maryland Transportation Authority expects more than 330,000 cars to cross the Chesapeake Bay Bridge this Memorial Day weekend.
