Mark Bransford won't seek second Rochester council term

Apr. 24—ROCHESTER — Rochester City Council member Mark Bransford says he won't be seeking a second term.

The Ward 2 council member announced his decision Wednesday night in an email highlighting what he called an "incredible experience" during his time on the council.

"I'm proud to be a voice of the people and a staunch advocate for neighborhood integrity," he said. "I'm gratified to have played a role in Rochester becoming a premiere sports destination via the regional sports complex, which will spur growth and sorely needed economic diversity.

"I'm equally proud of championing historic preservation, particularly the downtown district, Soldiers Field, and Silver Lake Park. I step down knowing these emblematic symbols of our city's rich history are protected for future generations to enjoy."

The southwest ward council member, who was elected in 2020 after challenging Michael Wojcik for the seat, said he's gratified and humbled by the chance to serve during four years of change in the city.

"Rochester's future is bright," he said. "What an honor to have participated in helping Rochester continue to move forward, grow and evolve."

The announcement makes Bransford the second council member to decide not to seek a spot on the Nov. 5 ballot.

Council President Brooke Carlson

said in late March that she's not planning to seek a second term.

Two candidates — Shaun Palmer and Randy Schubring — have announced plans to seek the council president seat.

The official filing period for City Council seats is May 21 through June 3. A primary election will be held on Aug. 13 for any races with more than two candidates.
