Marion prepares for Memorial Day commemoration

MARION, Va. (WJHL) — The Town of Marion will continue its annual tradition of commemorating Memorial Day with music, special programs and a parade on May 27.

A display of flags and crosses will be placed on the Smyth County Courthouse lawn and other areas in downtown Marion. Memorials for veterans who died in battle will be displayed on the grounds at Royal Oak Presbyterian Church.

“Each cross and flag represents a veteran who has passed,” Dr. James Gates, Vice Mayor of Marion, said. “This year, we anticipate nearly 2,000 of these ‘silent memorials.'”

The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. (VFW) will host the patriotic tribute show “Letters From Home” at the Lincoln Theatre on Sunday, May 26 at 3 p.m.

The Marion Memorial Day Grand Parade will begin on Main Street at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 27. Marion VFW Post 4667 will host a community cookout following the parade.

VFW Post 4667 and public works crews will start setting up the memorials on May 20. The flags will remain in place through early June.
