New Manheim Township apartment complex leads to neighbor concerns

MANHEIM TOWNSHIP, Pa. (WHTM) – A big need is about to be filled in Manheim Township as eight apartment buildings are being built off Route 30 and New Holland Pike.

The complex, known as Grandview Strands, will comprise of about 200 apartment units. Some neighbors aren’t all for the new units.

“We’re really concerned about the traffic that’s going to be going through the neighborhood,” Adam Hosey said.

Hosey lives near the new complex. He has a five and seven year old and believes more safety measures need to be taken.

“As they are growing up, they’re going to be on their bikes more, they’re going to be walking around more,” Hosey said. “We just wish there were some traffic calming measures that were that were instituted to make the slow down drivers.”

Neighbors are concerned about a road being built by Jaycee Park. Apartment residents will use it to get into the complex. Many families take their kids to that park.

Manheim Township manager Rick Kane says there’s a plan to slow traffic down.

“We’re going to have a four-way stop there with a raised or elevated intersection profile to help with speed control,” Kane said. “They’re widening out the intersection there. They’re taking some of the vegetation down, putting in all new curb sidewalks, some of which does not exist right now.”

The newer Grandview family homes are separated from the apartment complex by a wetlands, which the township will be acquiring from the developer.

“The new 13 acres will tie into our existing Jaycee Park. That will more than double the size of that park when that land is dedicated to the township as park space, as open land,” Kane said. “It will already be improved. So they’re putting walking trails and things of that nature in that 13 acres.”

Kane says residents should start moving into the complex sometime this summer. The eight buildings will be finished at different times.
