Man faces attempted murder charge in Highway 501 road rage shooting near Conway

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — A New York man is facing an attempted murder charge after an apparent road rage shooting along Highway 501 in the Conway area, according to an Horry County police report.

Anthony Rhone Simmons Jr. was charged with attempted murder. He was booked into the J. Reuben Long Detention Center at about 9:10 p.m. Tuesday.

Police responded to the area of Highway 501 and Cox Ferry Road just before 8 p.m. Tuesday for shots being fired from a vehicle, according to the report. The victim met with police and told them she was driving Conway-bound on Highway 501 at Carolina Forest Boulevard in heavy traffic.

She told police that’s when she noticed Simmons’ vehicle tailgating behind her and road raging, the report said. The woman said she stuck her middle finger out and then Simmons responded by pointing a pistol out of the window and firing it at her.

The woman said she then tried to speed up and separate herself from him, but she couldn’t because of the heavy traffic and Simmons continued to follow, according to the report. She said while she was on the phone with 911, they got to the area of Cox Ferry Road when Simmons shot at her again.

The woman said she sped up to about 70 mph to try and get away from him, but Simmons continued to follow her and shot at her again at 3rd Avenue Extension in Conway, according to the report. She then noticed the police cars and drove to the Conway Police Department.

As of this writing, Simmons was still in jail, online booking records show. His bond has not been set.
