Man charged in connection with sexual assault in Baton Rouge
BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — One man is facing multiple charges after an investigation into a reported sexual assault by the Baton Rouge Police Department.
Joseph Hayes was charged with first-degree rape, aggravated burglary, distribution/possession with the intent to distribute schedule II with a controlled dangerous substance and misdemeanor sexual battery.
A woman said that when she woke up, a man “was in her apartment, armed with an axe,” according to BRPD. Detectives later identified that man to be Hayes.
BRPD said he initially “demanded items from the apartment but changed his mind and sexually assaulted her.”
On Wednesday, April 17, officers were asked to look into suspicious activity in the 1800 block of Blvd de Province. Officers found Hayes and he tried to run away.

As the investigation unfolded, detectives “learned that Hayes was the person responsible for the sexual assault that occurred on April 13,” according to BRPD.
Hayes was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.
