Man, 63, charged in connection to two overdose deaths in North Park

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A 63-year-old man was charged in federal court on Thursday in connection to the fentanyl overdose deaths of two people at a North park residence in 2022.

Scott Anthony Sargent is accused of supplying the drugs that led to the two individuals’ passing. He was also charged with conspiracy to distribute fentanyl and methamphetamine, federal prosecutors said. He was ordered to be held without bond on Thursday.

According to the local U.S. Attorney’s office, San Diego police were alerted to the incident around 6 a.m. on Nov. 10, 2022. Upon arrival to the scene, four people, including Sargent, were found lying unresponsive on the floor of a bedroom.

Two of the individuals, identified in court records by the initials Z.W. and M.L., were pronounced dead at the scene. Sargent and the third individual were treated with Narcan and transported to nearby hospitals where they made a full recovery, prosecutors said.

In the investigation, authorities say Sargent was identified as the individual who brought the drugs — a mixture of fentanyl and para-fluorofentanyl — that led to the overdoses. According to the U.S. Attorney, this mixture was found inside his backpack and a duffel bag recovered at the scene, as well as a storage unit belonging to the San Diego resident.

Each charge facing Sargent carries a maximum sentence of life in prison, federal prosecutors say.
