Man, 44, dies in house fire overnight in unincorporated Grayslake

GRAYSLAKE, Ill. — A 44-year-old man died in a fire after being trapped inside a burning home in unincorporated Grayslake overnight, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office said.

Firefighters from Gurnee found Thomas Morley inside the home on the 17800 block of West Winnebago Drive early Sunday. Despite efforts, Morley was pronounced dead at an area hospital. A Monday statement from the Lake County Coroner’s Office said his death was consistent with smoke inhalation.

Sheriff’s deputies called to the home just before 12:45 a.m. Sunday were met by a 63-year-old woman who’d made it out of the home but said her son was still inside. Deputies attempted to enter the home and find the man, but they were unable to enter because the smoke was too heavy, the sheriff’s office said.

According to the sheriff’s office, Gurnee firefighters soon arrived and were able to enter the home wearing protective gear. They located Morley and found him unconscious and not breathing, the sheriff’s office says.
