MISHAWAKA — University Park Mall will increase security out of an abundance of caution, it said in a press release Monday, following an indoor shooting May 11.

"We are committed to maintaining a strong security program that includes numerous measures in addition to staying in close collaboration with local law enforcement," a spokesperson said in the press release.

On May 11, police responded to multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire within the mall around 6:19 p.m. They had not identified a victim or suspect at that time.

An arrest was made on May 13, as Mishawaka Police responded to the St. Joseph Regional Medical Center regarding a 16-year-old who had suffered a gunshot wound to the foot. The 16-year-old faces charges of dangerous possession of a firearm and unlawful carry of a firearm by a juvenile to be reviewed by the St. Joseph County Prosecutor's office.

A mall spokesperson said in the press release that it take its responsibility seriously to ensure a "safe and comfortable environment for our shoppers, employees and retailers." Representatives from the mall did not respond when The Tribune reached out to define how long increased security will last or where it will take place.

This incident is being investigated by the Mishawaka Police Department's Major Crimes Unit.

Dispatch is reachable at 911 and the Mishawaka Police Department at 574-258-1678.
