UPDATE: The City of Tyler said a boil water notice was issued as of 3:55 p.m. for TWU customers in west Tyler as a safety precaution due to the main break.

Boil water notice do’s and don’ts

Tyler ISD said that schools affected by the boil water notice will continue as normal on Tuesday. The district has sealed off the water fountains, and bottled water has been delivered to the affected schools.

The boil water notice will affect 3,404 water connections to properties in the area. People can check if their residence or business is affected by the notice here.

The city said the boil water notice should be rescinded within 48 to 72 hours.

“To ensure the destruction of all harmful bacteria and other microbes, water for drinking, cooking, and ice-making should be boiled and cooled prior to use for drinking water or human consumption purposes. The water should be brought to a vigorous rolling boil and then boiled for two minutes,” the City of Tyler said.

Kate Dietz, the director of utilities for the City of Tyler said that the water main break was noticed around 7:30 a.m. on Monday morning.

“Two of the tanks started dropping around 7:30 this morning,” said Dietz. “We knew it was a large line because of the amount of water we were losing.”

According to Dietz, the boil water notice is a precautionary measure they’ve put in place while they repair the break. Dietz hopes that the repairs will be done in the next 24 hours.

“This is primarily a precautionary measure that we take with such a large break in the line. We want to ensure the public health and safety,” said Dietz.

She added that the 18-inch water line, which broke when it’s cap came off, was first installed in 1955, almost 70 years ago.

TYLER, Texas (KETK) – A water main break is causing low pressure for many Tyler residents Monday morning.

City authorities said that Tyler Water Utilities found a “significant break” in a water main at 2025 SSW Loop 323. Due to that break, water tanks on the west side of town are depleted and residents are seeing water shortages or low water pressure.

Crews found an 18-inch water main break in front of Sam’s, a city official said. Oncor, TxDOT, city crews and more remain on site to address the issue.

“The area where this water main break occurred is right near Loop 323, our roadway where we also have some electrical poles, we have easements, obviously we have the water main in the ground,” Tyler Public Information Officer Payton Weidman said. “We have lots of different entities that have their infrastructure here in this area, so we want to ensure that we are all able to operate smoothly for our community. That’s why we have so many crews on the scene, just to see how they may be affected or may not be affected by the situation.”

Weidman said drivers are encouraged to pass carefully through the area. For updates, people can download the city’s RAVE app.

TWU crews are working on repairs and contained the leak as of 9 a.m. They are working with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality to determine the extent of the issue.

Weidman said the cause of the break is still unknown.
