BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) – The Blessing Corner is at it again, delivering more blessings to low income, unsheltered and unchurched families in Bakersfield.  It’s happening this Easter Sunday.

Bonnie and John Turner of Blessing Corner are inviting a few dozen friends over. That’s just the kind of thing they like to do, that they’re called to do multiple times a year. From Christmas gifts for kids from low-income families, and food for their tables at home, to back-to-school events that clothe and equip kids for the classroom every August – that’s what Blessing Corner, an outreach ministry, has been doing since 1995.

Since 2005, they’ve been on Union Avenue, in the historic former home of the Saddle & Sirloin and later Chateau Basque restaurant.

This Sunday, Blessing Corner will again feed the masses. Kids, accompanied by a parent or guardian, are especially welcome.

“Of course, you know, we’re a church first,” Bonnie Turner said, “It’s always our desire to not only invite folks to get to know the Lord, but we want them to know that there’s physical help.”

On the menu will be Swedish meatballs, macaroni and cheese for the kids, mashed potatoes for the adults, glazed carrots for everyone, and a big helping of Jesus’s love.

And yes, the Easter Bunny.

“For the people that we’re trying to reach that are unchurched, the people that don’t know Jesus,” the Blessing Corner offers this, Bonnie said. “What they know is the Easter Bunny, so when they come in, we do also teach what the real meaning of Easter is about.”

It starts Sunday at 11 a.m., with registration starting a little beforehand, and running until 1:30 or 2 p.m.

Sue England has been a member of the Blessing Corner board of directors for six years now.

“It’s a blessing to see the faces of the children in our community being blessed with toys and face painting and to hunt eggs that have money in them,” she said. “Also we get to share the love of Jesus… You don’t have to be a believer, but we’re gonna tell you about the Lord.”

No rest for the weary – as if Bonnie Turner and friends show any outward sign of weariness.

Their next project will be the Blessing Corner Grocery Store – coming eventually.

“It’s a free – F-R-E-E – free market,” Bonnie said. “It’s really needed here. The need that we deal with is just overwhelmingly nonstop.”

There’s much to do before Blessing Corner can even consider an opening date. For starters, they’ll need about $140,000. Want to help? Visit their website. Or talk to Bonnie at the free Easter Sunday event – if you can get her to stop moving for a second.
