Last week, British sports car maker Lotus announced the Exige Race 380, a track-only version of its already hardcore Exige Sport 380. It has a 375-horsepower 3.5-liter supercharged V6, weighs just 2200 pounds, and can lap Lotus's test track faster than any other Exige. Unsurprisingly, it's a riot. Like most other Lotuses, we assumed it wouldn't be officially offered here in the U.S. But it turns out we were wrong.

Starting in May of 2017, Lotus will begin selling the Exige Race 380 to U.S. customers as a "track use only vehicle." Lotus can do this because unlike the regular Exige-which can't be sold here as it doesn't conform to our traffic safety laws-the Race 380 isn't meant to be registered for road use anywhere in the world.

This isn't the first time Lotus has imported track-only cars to our shores. Previous track specials like the Exige Cup S have been available here in the past-though none of them offered the level of performance promised by the Race 380.

MSRP will start at $145,000 before any options, taxes, or importation fees, so if you're itching for a new toy to show off to your track day pals, head to your local Lotus dealer now.
