Leon County commissioners honored a funk-rock legend who happens to call Leon County home.

Commissioners at Tuesday's meeting added a special proclamation to their agenda at the last minute to honor George Clinton of the Parliament-Funkadelic collective. He has called Leon County home for the last 25 years.

"George Clinton stands as a pioneer of funk music and afro-futurism," Commissioner Nick Maddox said.

Just last month, the City of Tallahassee held a similar ceremony honoring Clinton with the key to the city.

The entire county commission presented Clinton with the honor alongside members of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., where Clinton is an honorary member.

"George Clinton has been honored by prestigious institutions, such as the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture and received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019," Commissioner Carolyn Cummings said.

"In addition to being recently honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Leon County acknowledges George Clinton's unparalleled influence on music, art and fashion, shaping the careers of artists spanning genres from Prince to Red Hot Chili Peppers, to Snoop Dogg," Cummings added.

After being presented with the award, Clinton shared a few words with those at the meeting.

"I was already in love with the place," Clinton said. "Now, after this, y'all ain't gonna be able to get rid of me."
