Little Rock handywomen making a name for their business in male-dominated profession

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – When you need something fixed around the house, most people either do it themselves or call a handyman, but what about a handywoman?

It’s a term becoming more common as the number of people searching specifically for tradeswomen is on the rise.

Sydney and Winter Red Horse are changing the game and the name, one honey-do list at a time.

“Yes, exactly like that, literally just that, only we’re women,” Sydney Red Horse said.

The duo are the proud owners of Luck Be a Lady Rentals and Repairs, building, fixing and creating making a name for themselves in an industry dominated by men.

“Drywall repair, flooring repairs, even traditional handy work like a loose doorknob or squeaky hinges,” Winter Red Horse said. “I thought, ‘Well, I can do all the same things, why couldn’t I?’”

Both have played with tools since they were young, but their desire to start their own business grew after successfully flipping their first rental.

“That was like the turning point of where I realized I can do something on my own and she can be doing flooring in here and finish a tub in here and was like, ‘Wow, we are actually pretty efficient,” Sydney said.

Since July of 2023, they’ve been building not only their clientele but trust in their community.

“Just having women like-minded, I was really looking forward to working with them,” Autumn Beaulieu, owner of Jagr Jane in Little Rock, said.

“We get some feedback about our communication that that’s something we do well. There’s also a sense of safety,” Sydney said.

The two are empowering themselves with each job completed and empowering other women, too.

“I’m a firm believer that anybody can learn how to do anything that they want to do,” Winter said. “If they’re willing to dedicate the time and attention to do it, the possibilities are really endless.”
