LIST: Memorial Day Events around the Tennessee Valley

(WHNT) — Memorial Day is Monday, and people across the Tennessee Valley are coming together to remember those who have given the ultimate sacrifice.

Memorial Day is a day set aside for Americans to honor those who have given their lives in service to the nation. While the holiday began and remains a solemn occasion, it has over the years also become an unofficial kickoff to summer for many Americans. With that in mind, Memorial Day-related activities range from those of solemn remembrance to family and community fun.

Here is a list of some Memorial Day activities planned for the Tennessee Valley:

Madison County

  • The Electric Belle will host Miltowne and T.U.B as a part of Jamorial Day. The event is described as a big backyard jam band party. The event will be at The Electric Belle at 3414 Governors Dr. SW Suite 310 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday. Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for children under 12.

  • Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5162 will host a wreath-laying ceremony at Maple Hill Cemetery on Monday morning. The ceremony will begin at 9 a.m.

  • The Cotton Row Run will make its return to Huntsville on Monday, May 27. The annual running event honors fallen military members and proceeds benefit Gold Star Families, Snowball Express, Gold Star Moms, and other charities in the community. Lauderdale County

  • The 2024 Florence-Lauderdale Memorial Day Ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday in Veterans Memorial Park at 301 Veterans Park Drive. The Ceremony will feature several events, including a wreath-laying ceremony, the playing of Taps, prayer, and other special remembrances. In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held at Florence-Lauderdale Coliseum at 702 Veterans Drive in Florence.

Jackson County

  • Jackson County’s annual Memorial Day program will be held in Scottsboro on Monday. The event will begin at 9:30 a.m. at Veterans Park with a wreath-laying ceremony followed by refreshments at the VFW Post Home. Veterans Park and the VFW Post Home are located at 1616 Heroes Drive, Scottsboro, AL 35768. The event will continue at 10:45 a.m. at the Collins Intermediate Auditorium with a performance by Scottsboro’s Community Band and a speech by Army Lieutenant General Robert A Rasch, The Director of Rapid Capabilities and Critical Technologies Office at Redstone Arsenal. Collins Intermediate is located at 102 Legion Drive, Scottsboro, AL 35768.

Morgan County

  • Vets Like Us will host the Decatur Morgan County Gold Star Families Memorial Day Service on Monday beginning at 10 a.m. The event will be held at Daikin Amphitheatre in Founders Park located at 905 Canal Steet NE in Decatur. The ceremony will include the reading of the names of 208 service members from Morgan County who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving their country. Additionally, there will be a laying of a wreath at the Gold Star Family Memorial Monument.

Marshall County

  • The Lake Guntersville Chamber of Commerce will hold a Memorial Day Service at 2 p.m. on Monday a the Guntersville Farmers Market at 880 Sunset Drive. The service will be followed by a groundbreaking for the Veterans Park Memorial at 2:30 p.m.

  • The City of Boaz will hold a Memorial Day Ceremony at VFW Post 6837 at 1441 U.S. Highway 431 in Boaz. The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m.
