Golden Retriever Puppy’s Sweet Morning Routine Is Making People Light Up

Introducing a new puppy to your family and life is a fun and exciting time. They're getting to know you and you're getting to know them, and if you are like me, you document everything by taking an uncountable number of pictures and videos. Gus is an adorable Golden Retriever puppy who has only been with his humans for a month or so. Like most puppies, he has some cute things that he does, like his morning routine that his mom shared with us at the beginning of April.

Every morning after breakfast, Gus finds something that he wants from upstairs and takes it downstairs to his bed. Sometimes that could be dad's shirt or mom's sports bra, while other times it's a toy or some other treasure that he finds. Watch as Gus makes his way downstairs - his happy little tail and trot will totally make you smile!

His wagging tail and little trot is just the best! Mom says at the end of the video that Gus is so proud of himself when he does it each morning, and commenter @Amber Mason said, "And so he should be!"

Why Do Dogs Steal Their Humans' Things?

We recently brought home a new puppy, and some of her favorite things to do are to go on walks, chew on anything and everything that she can find (including our brand-new baseboards) and steal our things...slippers happen to be a favorite and she loves sticking her nose right into them. Why do dogs love stealing our things so much?

Some dogs do it out of boredom. If you are not paying attention to them, they have pent up energy, or don't have things to stimulate them mentally, they know that a surefire way to get your attention is to take something that they aren't supposed to have. Our puppy knows when she runs off with anything out of their rooms, the kids will chase her to get it back.

I love this tip I found at Top Dog Tips, "In most cases, a dog will want you to yell, run, and chase after them; that’s the whole point of them nabbing the object anyway because they see it as part of the game. To stop your dog from stealing, act like you’re uninterested and reach for something else. The best option would be a toy that belongs to your pooch."

Wag! shared the reason they take clothing, "According to a study published in the journal Genome Biology, dogs have a much more heightened sense of smell than humans and depend on their noses to send and receive messages among their packs. When you wear clothing, it picks up a scent that is unique and close to you. Dogs interpret this to mean that it is an important item, and you leaving it behind means that you have given it to him."

While it's annoying for us, our dogs don't see it as 'stealing'; they either just want our attention or to be close to us. Try to remember that next time Fido chews up a shoe or favorite tee shirt - it's easier said than done!
