I've always had a soft spot for Tex-Mex and Southwestern cuisines. Though these bold, zesty flavors are beloved in the U.S., they haven't gained the same widespread popularity at home in Canada. As a result, finding Tex-Mex-style ingredients like chopped green chiles can be a real challenge. I'm limited to one or two brands, and the price tag is hefty—as much as $2.50 for a small can.

Whenever I cross the U.S. border, I make a trip to ALDI for my go-to ingredients, including Pueblo Lindo Chopped Green Chiles. At a mere 89 cents per four-ounce can, these zingy chiles are a steal even with the exchange rate. And they're an absolute game-changer in the kitchen.

Why I Love ALDI’s Chopped Green Chiles

These chiles are my secret weapon for adding a bit of heat and depth to everyday meals. An instant flavor infusion, they lend many of my favorite dishes a mildly spicy flair. Since my kids are half Sri Lankan and we love spicy food, I feel an important duty to slowly build their tolerance for spice. At 89 cents a can, I can afford to stock up (and I do at 10-plus cans per visit), which allows me to bring the flavors I love to more of our meals.

How I Use Chopped Green Chiles

Stirring a couple tablespoons of the chiles into scrambled eggs brings this simple morning breakfast to life, especially with the low-lift additions of shredded cheese, tortillas, and hot sauce. Adding a can to my burger mixture gives the patties an instant upgrade.

They’re just as great for updating everyday staples from rice and mac and cheese to hummus. An obvious must-have for many Tex-Mex or Southwestern dishes, like enchilada casseroles and ground beef tacos, they lend a distinctive flavor that's hard to replicate with other ingredients.

One of my family's favorite weeknight meals is an easy white chicken chili that achieves its full potential with this pantry staple. The pièce de résistance (and real selling point for my kids) is that it’s garnished with tater tots. The tots make it feel fun while the chiles bring a little of the Southwest to our cold, Canadian kitchen.

If you find yourself longing for these bold, zesty flavors, you’d do well to grab a few cans of these chopped green chiles on your next ALDI run. No meal will ever be boring again!
