Life sentence in Labor Day murders at Stafford Park

CLEVELAND (WJW) — The man who pleaded guilty to killing his pregnant sister as well as her unborn child and husband will remain in prison for the rest of his life.
Jason Iverson, 29, of Warrensville Heights, was sentenced Wednesday to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murders of his sister, 30-year-old Mercedes Iverson, who was 7 1/2 months pregnant; the woman’s unborn child; and her husband, 31-year-old Norbert Carter.

It happened Sept. 4, Labor Day, while they were at a church picnic in Maple Heights‘ Stafford Park, prosecutors have said. Police said Jason came to the park that day to confront his family members amid a “longstanding” feud.
Mercedes, Carter and Jason’s 13-year-old son tried to leave in a car. There in the parking lot, Jason opened fire, shooting Mercedes and grazing the 13-year-old boy. Carter fled and Jason followed him into a bathroom, where he shot him 12 times, prosecutors said.
Carter was pronounced dead at the scene. Mercedes and her unborn child were transported to a hospital, where they were pronounced dead. The baby girl’s gestational age was 29 weeks, according to the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Jason then tried to flee onto Auburn Avenue, where he was caught by police.

Iverson pleaded guilty in March to three counts of aggravated murder and one count of felonious assault.
“The amount of pain he inflicted on these families is immeasurable. I hope today these families can begin to heal and my thoughts and prayers remain with them,” Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O’Malley is quoted in a news release.
