LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Former President Donald Trump will visit Michigan Tuesday. This comes as President Joe Biden seems to be gaining ground among voters in the mitten state.

The latest polling data in Michigan has the former president holding a slim lead over the current president. However, in the latest national poll, Biden is now in a statistical dead with Trump–48-45 in favor of Biden.

In early February this year, Michigan pollster Richard Czuba saw some troubling numbers for Biden, regarding his support among Democrats.

“I’ve never seen an incumbent office holder, particularly a president, not bring in his own party in the re-elect question,” said Czuba.

That was almost two months ago, but now the national survey shows 94% of the Democrats are voting for Biden–compared to the 92% of Republicans for Trump.

And with all-important independent voters, Trump did have a hefty lead before–but now it’s Biden, leading by 7 points with independents.

One Meridian Township Democrat, who wants Democrats to keep control of the Michigan House, says she isn’t worried about Biden being a drag at the top of the ticket.

“No, he is not a liability,” said State Rep. Julie Brixie, D-Meridian Township. “Sometimes the polls are right and somethings they are wrong.”

The Democrats rode into power in Lansing in 2023, partly because of Proposal 3, which legalized abortion.

Lots of voters showed up at the polls to vote on that issue. Prop 3 is not on the ballot this November, but related issues are.

Brixie said women’s rights are still at risk, and being challenged by the Republican party. “People want the right to a legal abortion! People want the right to have an IVF procedure if they need to, in order to start their family,” Brixie said. “Nobody wants politicians in their bedroom or in their doctor’s office.”

Which is why Governor Whitmer has told the Biden campaign to talk more about a woman’s right to choose, on a variety of fronts.
