May 24—Those in need of a restroom at Sandstone Ranch Community Park and Nature Area, 3001 Colo. 119, will have to use a portable toilet, after the bathrooms were vandalized sometime in early May, according to Timber Toste, Longmont Parks and Forestry superintendent.

The urinals, sinks, toilets, doors, hardware and lights are broken, Toste said. He said workers are not sure yet how much it all will cost to repair, other than the doors to the facility.

Those doors are currently being repaired at a cost of $34,000, and the restrooms are expected to open at Sandstone Ranch toward the end of June, Toste said.

Restrooms in city parks generally reopen in early April, and the vast majority are currently open and available to park users.

In addition to the bathrooms at Sandstone Ranch Park, the restrooms at the 119 Street Trailhead at the St. Vrain Greenway, 9801 N. 119th St., also are shut down due to vandalism.

Multiple ADA and non-ADA portable toilets are available at Sandstone Ranch Park, and workers installed one ADA portable toilet at the 119 Street Trailhead.

Vandalism to outdoor city facilities is not a new problem. In 2020, Longmont Public Safety officials said they suspected someone set off fireworks and destroyed a toilet and sink in the Sandstone Ranch Overlook restroom, 2525 E. Ken Pratt Blvd. City officials estimated that vandals caused about $57,000 in damage to public facilities in the first six months of that year.
