Las Vegas teacher asking for county’s help to make east valley road safer

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — As the number of deaths on Las Vegas valley roads continues to climb, residents of a northeast valley neighborhood are hoping the county can help to make things safer in his neighborhood.

“I’ve seen the aftermath of a couple accidents in this area and it’s not OK. Things need to change,” English teacher Darrell Shakespear said.

He lives and works in the area of Charleston and Hollywood boulevards. He told 8 News Now that he has seen far too many accidents in the area and says there needs to be better security on valley roadways.

He’s not the only one who has noticed.

“A lot of speeding cars and where we live you can hear them so we know that they’re going fast,” Chelsie La Vrar said. “The most recent incident happened with a 17-year-old boy. I would say that affected our community greatly particularly me as a parent.

In March, a teenager lost his life after being hit on Tree Line Drive. Police said the driver was speeding.

In an effort to get the county’s attention, Shakespear started a petition to add a four-way stop at the intersection of Tree Line Drive and American Beauty Avenue with a goal of 5,000 signatures. As of Sunday, the petition was at almost 500 signatures.

“I would like to see Tick Segerblom work with public works and get things changed. I contacted his office on Thursday. He’s trying to see what Public Works can do as an immediate fix, but also see what we can do as a long-term fix,” he said.

Shakespear emphasized that students from Harney Middle School, Goldfarb Elementary School, Iverson Elementary School, and Las Vegas High School are all at risk when crossing the intersection without a protected stop sign or four-way stop.
