Laural Smith, the Autism Classroom Teacher at Coal City Elementary School, says differences are normal and should be addressed in a respectful way.

“Even though we may look alike, there are differences among everyone and there are ways to ask someone without being disrespectful. There’s also ways to interact and connect with others who are different from you. That’s really all that this is about is learning that while everyone is different we’re all still the same. We all have similar interests and wants and needs” said Smith.

When it comes to inclusion, some may not understand and not know how to address differences.

Smith said this the importance of this event is understanding and learning.

“I would say probably just understanding and learning about everyone and how you may not know that someone struggles with something but they really do, and just figuring out different ways to interact with other members of the community” said Smith to 59News.

With students listening together, differences are addressed with the hope that inclusion happens not just in schools, but everywhere.
