Kenny Brooks leaving Virginia Tech for head coach position at University of Kentucky

BLACKSBURG, Va. (WFXR) — Virginia Tech women’s head coach Kenny Brooks is heading to Kentucky.
The Virginia Tech Athletics Department announced that Brooks is set to leave as the head coach for the women’s basketball team and accept the same position at the University of Kentucky.
Brooks is known as an architect of one the most storied stretches of the Hokies women’s basketball history. He joined the Hokies in 2016 where he revitalized the basketball program breaking school records.
In his eight seasons with the lady Hokies, Brooks built the Hokies into a champion brand. He produced at least 20 wins seven times while guiding Tech to the NCAA Tournament for four straight seasons. In 2023, Brooks punched 500 career coaching wins. He compiled a 180-82 overall record, which included a school-record 31 winds in 2022-23 that culminated in the program’s first-ever Final Four appearance.

“Needless to say, Kenny, his staff and student-athletes created a culture of excellence on and off the court. He was an incredible mentor to the young women in our women’s basketball program and a terrific representative of our department and university. We wish Kenny and his family well in this next chapter of his career,” said Virginia Tech Director of Athletics Whit Babcock. “I remain confident in the trajectory of our women’s basketball program and when combined with our resources, specifically NIL, that the future of our women’s basketball program is bright.”
Virginia Tech says it will begin an immediate national search for the Hokies’s next women’s basketball coach.
