KCK to take part in community-wide challenge to save the planet

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Re.Use.Full, a local nonprofit organization, teamed up with the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas (UG) to launch a year-long, community-wide challenge in honor of Earth Day.

The Community Recycling Challenge campaign intends to prevent hard-to-recycle plastics from entering landfills. According to a news release, for every thousand pounds of material collected, Trex — an eco-friendly and sustainable decking company — will repurpose the material into a park bench for the community.

“Helping KCK residents connect not only with the importance of recycling but demonstrating how these efforts translate into a physical benefit for our community is a win-win,” said Re.Use.Full Executive Director Leslie Scott.

Wyandotte County visitors are asked to drop off specific plastic items, like grocery bags, bread bags, bubble wrap and sandwich bags, at any of the three locations:

  1. Neighborhood Resource Center – 4953 State Avenue

  2. Recycling & Yard Waste Center – 3241 Park Drive

  3. Municipal Building Lobby – 701 N. 7th Street

According to the release, the challenge is hosted by NexTrex, a branch of Trex that works to divert waste from landfills and waterways. Its goal is to collect 1,000 pounds of plastic over the next 12 months.

Re.Use.Full and the UG will collect and weigh the items before they get sent to Trex for repurposing.

“We have heard a lot from the community about dumping and the overall perception of blight,” said Long-Range Planner Alyssa Marcy, “and this is exactly the type of initiative defined in our recently adopted PlanKCK comprehensive plan to help us address these issues.”

More opportunities to get involved will be introduced in the coming months, the release said. This includes ways for local organizations to create recycling drives and drop-off locations of their own.
