Watch: Derek Draper opens birthday cards with Kate Garraway in a new documentary clip
Kate Garraway has shared a moving family moment from her final birthday with late husband Derek Draper in her third documentary about him.
Derek's Story is set to air on ITV tonight and follows the final year of Draper's life as he battled the health complications of COVID.
Good Morning Britain presenter Garraway speaks out on the spiralling debts she was left with and the broken care system she tried to navigate during the documentary, but it also includes touching scenes of the family trying to enjoy their daily lives, including the final birthday Garraway would spend with Draper.
A preview from Kate Garraway: Derek's Story shows the TV star going into Draper's bedroom and saying: "Hi darling, what I was hoping I might do with you is open up some of my birthday cards, and then you could read some and I could read some. Does that sound like something?" as he replies: "Yes."
She then tells the cameras: "I am 56, which means I'm closer to 60 than 50, which I'm glad about. And it also is the small period where Derek is my toyboy, until we get to August (his birthday)."
The couple's teenage son Billy then comes in to read out some of Garraway's cards too, and Draper is shown reading out the birthday messages to her.
Garraway opens a card from Draper's parents, and then Billy and his dad share a laugh as Draper says of one card: "It's from Maggie the neighbour."
Billy tells him: "Well read it out, you can't just say who it's from!" as Draper laughs and Billy leaves the room.
Garraway asks her husband: "How do you feel about having a 56-year-old wife?" and he replies: "Good."
She looks close to tears as she tells him: "Love you," then laughs, adding: "That's the moment to say it back, by the way."
Draper tells her: "I love you, too."
Garraway has previously made two award-winning documentaries about her late husband's health battle, Finding Derek and Caring for Derek, but has said this one was his idea.
In the documentary he says: "I want you to hear my story... I want to be heard."
Draper, who Garraway has two children with, passed away in January from COVID complications. He had spent a year in hospital after contracting the virus in 2020 and was thought to be one of the UK's worst-affected patients.
Kate Garraway: Derek's Story airs on ITV at 9pm tonight.
