TOPEKA (KSNT) – Kansas Governor Laura Kelly is issuing a state of disaster emergency due to the threat posed by upcoming severe weather including hail and tornadoes.

The Adjutant General’s Department of Kansas announced in a press release that Kelly is giving the declaration in response to the threat of severe weather for Friday, April 26 through to Sunday, April 28. This declaration will activate the Kansas Response Plan to help mobilize state resources to help communities in need.

Jane Welch, a spokeswoman for the Adjutant General’s Department, says large hail, high winds and tornadoes are likely over the next few days. Flooding and flash floods are also a possibility.

“Due to the forecast of severe weather, I’ve declared a disaster emergency to ensure state assistance is readily available if needed,” Kelly said. “I encourage all Kansans to have an emergency kit and a family plan in preparation for a tornado. Stay updated on local weather conditions by listening to a NOAA weather radio or local TV and radio stations. Once a warning is activated, it is important to take cover.”

Welch says the Kansas Division of Emergency Management will staff the State Emergency Operations Center Friday through Sunday. These workers will monitor the situation and be prepared to help counties and local responders upon request.

The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) is also warning people of the risks that come with traveling under the threat of tornadic activity.

  • Pull over and find shelter.

  • Never try to outrun a tornado.

  • If no shelter is nearby, leave your vehicle and get below the road’s surface. Cover your head and neck. Keep an eye out for rising water levels.

  • Don’t seek shelter beneath an overpass or bridge.
