Kansas City motorcyclist raising awareness after recent crash

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Trevett McKnight and his young daughter were in a motorcycle crash last week.

McKnight said the crash emphasized the importance of safety and awareness on the roads, whether you are driving a car or motorcycle.

“Motorcycle awareness, being able to look not just once, but twice,” McKnight explained. “Motorcycles cannot stop like a car can, and even cars slide a little bit. Imagine that just on the two wheels, a bike slides a lot more.”

McKnight and his eight-year-old daughter were going to an event at her school when the crash happened.

“She wanted to ride the motorcycle. So the State of Missouri doesn’t have helmet laws (Over the age of 26), but my kid, no matter what, I make sure she always has one,” McKnight explained.

McKnight said he could only find one helmet the day of the crash, as his family had just moved. He put the helmet on his eight-year-old.

“So we live off of 75th Street, and we go around and go north. We get up to about 72nd Street before I realize a car is trying to get out in front of us,” McKnight said. “I try to stop. I’m going about 40 miles an hour on that street. It’s very hard to stop on a bike quickly. Next thing I remember, a doctor from Children’s Mercy was in the car behind me, and she jumped out.”

McKnight said the driver behind him, who was also a doctor, got out of her car to help until EMS arrived.

In Missouri, motorcycle operators over the age of 26 don’t have to wear a helmet. However, they are required to have proof of insurance.
