Johnson City firefighters honored for service

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) – Several Johnson City firefighters received recognition at a special ceremony Tuesday as thanks for their service.

The Johnson City Fire Department hosted the 2024 Service Awards at the Memorial Park Community Center. The event was attended by city leaders and commissioners in addition to firefighters and their families.

“It takes a special person to be a firefighter,” Johnson City Mayor Todd Fowler said at the event. “They wear many hats and carry many heavy responsibilities to protect lives and property in our community. They are heroes in Johnson City, and their excellence is something that fire departments across our nation should emulate.”

Fire Chief David Bell also offered his gratitude to the firefighters in the city.

“It is a privilege to be a part of the Johnson City Fire Department, and it is an honor to have the opportunity to work alongside each of you,” Bell said. “I look forward to continuing the Department’s mission of service and commitment to excellence in the years to come.”

A news release from the city listed the following notable awards that were presented at the ceremony:

Firefighter of the Year – Lt. Ben Blevins
Company Citation – Engine 2C (Lt. Shane Malone, Driver/Engineer Robbie Williams, and Lt. Kaitlin Asbury)

Letter of Commendation – Lt. Todd Justice

Firefighters who received promotions since 2022 were also recognized.
