Iran attack live updates: Israel vows to respond at ‘right time’ as US military downs over 80 drones

Israel has warned that the conflict with Iran is “not over yet” and vowed to “exact a price” as it considers its response to the 330 drones and missiles fired overnight by Tehran.

The Israeli military claimed more than 99 per cent of the drones and missiles were intercepted with help from allies including the US, UK, and France.

“We will build a regional coalition against the threat of Iran, and we will exact a price from it in the way and at the time that suits us,” Israel minister Benny Gantz said, despite Tehran insisting the matter can be considered “concluded”.

The US military said it destroyed 80 attack drones and at least six ballistic missiles that were fired from Iran and Yemen. The statement comes after president Joe Biden warned Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the US will not take part in a counter-offensive against Iran.

British prime minister Rishi Sunak confirmed that RAF jets had been involved and called for “calm heads to prevail” following the assault and ahead of a meeting of G7 leaders amid fears of further escalation in the event of a possible Israeli counter-strike.

UN Secretary General warns against escalation

“The Middle East is on the brink,” United Nations Secretary General António Guterres said, addressing the Security Council.

“The people of the region are confronting a real danger of a devastating full-scale conflict,” he continued. “Now is the time to defuse and de-escalate. Now is the time for maximum restraint.”

“It’s time to step back from the brink,” Mr Guterres later said. “It is vital to avoid any action that could lead to major military confrontations on multiple fronts in the Middle East. Civilians are already bearing the brunt and paying the highest price.”

The US has destroyed dozens of drones and at least six ballistic missiles aimed at Israel that were launched from Iran and Yemen, its military said.

It destroyed over 80 one-way attack drones, including seven UAVs targeted on the ground prior to launch, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said today.

“CENTCOM remains postured to support Israel’s defense against these dangerous actions by Iran. We will continue to work with all our regional partners to increase regional security,” the US military said.

Iran says it warned Isreal before attack

Iraq, Jordan and Turkey officials said the nations provided wide notices, days before Iran launched hundreds of drones and missiles in a retaliatory attack on Israel

.Iranian foreign minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said yesterday that Iran gave neighbouring countries and Israel’s ally the US a 72-hour notice before launching the strikes.

Turkey’s foreign ministry said it had spoken to both Washington and Tehran before the attack, adding it had conveyed messages as an intermediary to be sure reactions were proportionate.

“Iran said the reaction would be a response to Israel’s attack on its embassy in Damascus and that it would not go beyond this. We were aware of the possibilities. The developments were not a surprise,” a Turkish diplomatic source told Reuters.

Two Iraqi sources, including a government security adviser and a security official, said Iran had used diplomatic channels to inform Baghdad about the attack at least three days before it happened.

“The government clearly understood from the Iranian officials that the US military in Iraq was also aware of the attack in advance,” said the Iraqi security official.

All eyes look to Israel for response to Iran’s attack

Israeli diplomats and security officials believe a forceful response is inevitable, although it has not been decided yet whether it will be on Iran itself, or its proxies – Hezbollah in Lebanon, Shia militias in Syria and Iraq and the Houthis in Yemen.

“The indication from DC is that the US will not join an operation directly against Iran. But apart from that they are certainly not telling us what to do,” said a former Mossad officer who is temporarily back at the Interior Ministry since the Gaza war started.

“The priority is to ensure that we don’t face such an assault again from Iran, and also deter its proxies like Hezbollah which have been regularly attacking Israel. I think the war cabinet will want to keep all options open to try and deal with the multiple threats we are facing.”

Israeli defence experts said amid the mounting pressure from the US, Israel wouldn’t dare go for “full escalation”.

“They might do something symbolic like a specific attack on one designated target,” said Amos Harel, a non-resident senior fellow at Brookings.

Iran, meanwhile, assumes the US does not want a regional escalation that could lead to an all out war, said Holly Dagres, Iran expert and senior fellow at the Atlantic Council.

“But while there is an assumption that cooler heads will prevail, Israel can and will act on its own,“ she told The Independent.

Iran-Israel: Timeline of confrontation and what could happen next

01:30 , Andy Gregory

Iran has launched its first ever direct attack on Israeli soil, leaving the world waiting to see how Tel Aviv will respond amid fears of a wider conflict developing in the Middle East.

In a sharp escalation of the tensions roiling in the region since Israel’s war in Gaza erupted with Hamas’s attack on 7 October, Tehran launched a barrage of more than 330 killer drones, ballistic and cruise missiles towards Israel on Saturday night.

Britain and the US were among several of Israel’s allies who helped to shoot down the missiles, and Israeli authorities insisted that 99 per cent of them were shot down without causing any significant damage.

But with members of prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s war cabinet vowing to “exact a price” from Iran, which has said it considers the matter “concluded”, Tel Aviv’s response looks set to determine whether the confrontation with its longstanding foe continues to escalate.

US, Jordan speak in wake of attacks

01:00 , Katie Hawkinson

US President Joe Biden spoke with Jordan’s King Abdullah II on Sunday, the White House said.

“President Biden strongly condemned the attack launched by Iran that also threatened Jordan and the Jordanian people,” a statement from the White House reads.

“They also discussed the situation in Gaza, and reaffirmed their cooperation to increase critical humanitarian assistance to Gaza and to find a path to end the crisis as soon as possible,” the statement continued.

Meanwhile, Turkish, Jordanian and Iraqi officials have said Iran gave wide notice days before Saturday’s attack on Israel, allowing mass casualties and rampant escalation to be averted — however, a US official denied this.

US leaders convene to discuss Iranian attack on Israel

“President Biden convened a call this afternoon with Senate Majority Leader Schumer, Senate Minority Leader McConnell, Speaker of the House Johnson, and House Minority Leader Jeffries to discuss Iran’s unprecedented attack against Israel,” the White House said in a statement on Sunday evening.

“On the call, the President discussed the urgent need for the House of Representatives to pass the national security supplemental as soon as possible,” the statement continued.

That national security supplemental would provide $95bn in US aid to Israel, Ukraine and Taiwan. The bill was approved by the US Senate earlier this year but has yet to be taken up by the US House of Representatives.

Netanyahu ‘in political fight for his life’, says expert

Benjamin Netanyahu is in a “political fight for his life” Holly Dagres, an Iran expert and senior fellow at the Atlantic Council, told The Independent.

US Central Command issues statement on defence of Israel

Monday 15 April 2024 00:25 , Katie Hawkinson

“On April 13 and the morning of April 14, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) forces, supported by U.S. European Command destroyers, successfully engaged and destroyed more than 80 one-way attack uncrewed aerial vehicles (OWA UAV) and at least six ballistic missiles intended to strike Israel from Iran and Yemen,” US Central Command said in a statement Sunday evening.

“This includes a ballistic missile on its launcher vehicle and seven UAVs destroyed on the ground in Iranian-backed Houthi controlled areas of Yemen prior to their launch,” they continued. “Iran’s continued unprecedented, malign, and reckless behavior endangers regional stability and the safety of U.S. and coalition forces.”

“CENTCOM remains postured to support Israel’s defense against these dangerous actions by Iran. We will continue to work with all our regional partners to increase regional security.”

Israel shoots down drone ‘launched from Yemen'

Sunday 14 April 2024 23:59 , Andy Gregory

The IDF intercepted a drone near Eilat, stating that it assessed the UAV was launched from Yemen, according to British security firm Ambrey.

Ambrey said it had also observed unprecedented levels of Automatic Identification Systems (AIS)interference off Eilat and neighbouring Aqaba, Jordan, on Sunday. “These were due to electronic warfare counter-measures,” the firm said.

“A Sa’ar 6-class corvette successfully intercepted a UAV that approached Israeli territory from the southeast using the ‘C-Dome’ Defense System earlier this evening,” the IDF posted on X.

Israel used its seaborne missile defence system for the first time on Tuesday to shoot down a drone approaching from the Red Sea that had set off sirens in the port city of Eilat, the military said.

Eilat has been a frequent target for launches by Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen as a show of support for Hamas, the Palestinian group that rules Gaza and is also backed by Iran.

‘Time to step back from the brink,’ urges UN chief

Sunday 14 April 2024 23:33 , Andy Gregory

UN secretary general Antonio Guterres has said it is “time to step back from the brink”.

In a speech to the UN security council, he said: “It is vital to avoid any action that could lead to major military confrontations on multiple fronts in the Middle East. Civilians are already bearing the brunt and paying the highest price.

“And we have a shared responsibility to actively engage all parties concerned to prevent further escalation. As the Friendly Relations Declaration of 1970 states, acts of reprisal involving the use of force are barred under international law.

“We have a shared responsibility to secure an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza, the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages, and the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid.

“We have a shared responsibility to stop violence in the occupied West Bank, de-escalate the situation along the Blue Line, and re-establish safe navigation in the Red Sea. We have a shared responsibility to work for peace.

“Regional – and indeed global – peace and security are being undermined by the hour. Neither the region nor the world can afford more war.”

G7 ‘unequivocally’ condemns Iran attack

Sunday 14 April 2024 22:56 , Andy Gregory

Leaders of the G7 have “unequivocally” condemned Iran’s unprecedented attack on Israel and warned that the risk of an “uncontrollable regional escalation” must be avoided.

In a joint statement following an urgent call on Sunday, countries including the UK and US said they “stand ready to take further measures now and in response to further destabilising initiatives”.

US President Joe Biden convened a meeting of the G7 advanced democracies on Sunday “to co-ordinate a united diplomatic response to Iran’s brazen attack”.

The language indicates that the Biden administration does not want Iran’s assault to spiral into a broader military conflict after Israeli defence minister Yoav Gallant suggested the incident was “not over yet”.

Zelensky condemns Iran’s attack on Israel

Sunday 14 April 2024 21:03 , Andy Gregory

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky has condemned Iran’s drone and missile attack on Israel – and said his country needed help from its allies to fend off threats from the air, just as Israel did.

Mr Zelensky again called on the US Congress to approve a vital aid package that has been blocked by political wrangling for months. Ukraine’s forces are facing new onslaughts from Russian troops in the east and daily attacks on cities and infrastructure from Russian missiles and drones.

“Iran’s actions threaten the entire region and the world, just as Russia’s actions threaten a larger conflict, and the obvious collaboration between the two regimes in spreading terror must face a resolute and united response from the world,” Mr Zelensky said on X/Twitter.

Speaking later in his nightly video address, the president said the world had seen that “Israel was not alone in its defence – the threats in the sky were also destroyed by its allies. And when Ukraine says allies cannot turn a blind eye to Russian missiles and drones, it means that it is necessary to act, and act strongly”.

Ukraine’s skies, he said, were “not protected by rhetoric. And the fact that we in Ukraine have been waiting months for a vital support package - the fact that we are still waiting for a vote in Congress - testifies to the fact that the confidence of terrorists has also been growing for months,” he said.

“There is no more time to be wasted.”

Egypt’s foreign minister urges restraint in calls with Israel and Iran

Sunday 14 April 2024 20:08 , Andy Gregory

Egyptian foreign minister Sameh Shoukry expressed the need for restraint in phone calls with his counterparts Iran and Israel on Sunday, Egypt said.

Mr Shoukry called on his Iranian and Israeli counterparts “to exercise utmost self-restraint and refrain from provocations that would increase tension and instability in the region,” a foreign ministry statement said.

Egypt is ready to intensify its efforts to defuse the current crisis, “which has begun taking a dangerous turn as it coincides with the crisis in the Gaza Strip and adds tension to other hot spots in the region,” the statement added.

Mr Shoukry also held a call on Sunday with US secretary of state Anthony Blinken to discuss “what has become a serious threat to the security and stability” of the Middle East after Iran launched drones and missile on Israel early on Sunday.

Turkish, Jordanian and Iraqi officials say Iran gave them warning of attack

Sunday 14 April 2024 20:07 , Andy Gregory

Turkish, Jordanian and Iraqi officials have said that Iran gave wide notice days before Saturday’s attack on Israel, allowing mass casualties and rampant escalation to be averted – but a US official denied this.

Iran’s foreign minister Hossein Amirabdollahian said on Sunday that Iran had given neighbouring countries and Washington 72 hours’ notice that it would launch the strikes. Turkey’s foreign ministry said it had also spoken to both Washington and Tehran prior to the attack.

“Iran said the reaction would be a response to Israel’s attack on its embassy in Damascus and that it would not go beyond this. We were aware of the possibilities. The developments were not a surprise,” a Turkish diplomatic source told Reuters.

But a senior Washington official rejected Mr Amirabdollahian’s statement, saying Washington had had contact with Iran through Swiss intermediaries but did not get 72 hours’ notice.

“That is absolutely not true,” the official told Reuters. “They did not give a notification, nor did they give any sense of ... ‘these will be the targets, so evacuate them’.”

Tehran sent the United States a message only after the strikes began, and the intent was to be “highly destructive” said the official, speculating that Iran was saying it had given notice in order to cover embarrassment at the attack’s failure.

However, Iraqi, Turkish and Jordanian officials each said Iran had provided early warning of the attack last week, including some details.

Britain summons Iranian diplomat over ‘profoundly dangerous’ attack on Israel

Sunday 14 April 2024 19:28 , Andy Gregory

Britain’s foreign secretary David Cameron has summoned the charge d’affaires of the Iranian embassy to the Foreign Office following Tehran’s “profoundly dangerous” attack on Israel, according to a statement from the department.

A Foreign Office spokesperson said: “The Foreign Secretary summoned the charge d’affaires of the Iranian embassy today.

“The UK condemns in the strongest terms Iran’s direct and unprecedented attack against Israel, as well as their violation of Jordan and Iraq’s airspace. At a time of great tension in the Middle East, this was a profoundly dangerous and unnecessary escalation by Iran.

“The UK calls for the immediate and unconditional release of the civilian ship MSC Aries and its crew, which was seized by Iranian armed forces yesterday in international waters. The Iranian authorities must take meaningful and immediate action to de-escalate and halt its reckless and unlawful behaviour.

“The UK will continue to stand up for Israel’s security and the security of all our regional partners, including Jordan and Iraq. We will also continue to work with our international partners to protect and uphold stability in the region.”

IDF accuses Iran of wanting to ‘escalate’ tensions in region

Sunday 14 April 2024 19:07 , Andy Gregory

Asked what he believes Iran’s intentions were with last night’s attack, IDF spokesperson Daniel Hagari said: “Last night was the proof that Iran seeks escalation. Iran launched over 350 threats ... towards Israel, and also other countries in the region could have got that threat on the way.

“Iran doesn’t just pose a threat to Israel, Iran poses a threat to the entire Middle East. Iran yesterday seized a ship in the maritime domain. She hijacked a Western innocent cargo ship towards Iran. This is a crime, this is piracy. Iran closed the aerial space yesterday firing all those threats towards Israel. Iran, from the beginning of the war, wants only one thing – to escalate the region.

“Until now, she worked through her proxies, but now she revealed ... trying to escalate the region herself.”

Attack saw 350 drones and missiles fired from Iran, Iraq, Yemen and Lebanon, IDF claims

Iran’s attack last night consisted of around 350 drones, missiles and rockets sent from Iran, Iraq, Yemen and Lebanon, the IDF has said.

IDF spokesperson Daniel Hagari told a press conference: “Iran and its proxies launched approximately 350 suicide drones, cruise missiles, ballistic missiles and rockets from Iran, Iraq, Yemen and Hezbollah in Lebanon towards Israel, with approximately 60 tonnes of warheads and explosive materials.

“But the threat from Iran was met.”

Israel has ‘plans for both the offensive and defensive’, says IDF spokesperson

Sunday 14 April 2024 18:55 , Andy Gregory

Asked if Israel has decided to attack in retaliation, an IDF spokesperson told reporters: “We are at a high level of preparedness in all sectors and we’re prepared for all kinds of developments.

“We have plans both for the offensive and the defensive. We are on the alert, but I’m not going to add anything beyond that at this point. We have one job and one job only – to defend the safety of Israeli citizens.”

Air base struck in Iran attack remains fully operational, insists Israel

Sunday 14 April 2024 18:52 , Andy Gregory

Israel has insisted that the air base struck in Iran’s attack remains fully operational, and claimed aircraft continued to use it to carry out offensive and defensive missions “throughout the night”.

“Iran wanted to harm strategic infrastructure and therefore it conducted such extensive launches while trying to target the Nevatim air force base,” IDF spokesperson Daniel Hagari told reporters.

“Their plan failed. Out of hundreds of launches, only a few missiles managed to enter Israeli airspace and cause some very light damage to the infrastructure of this air force base. It continued to function as aircrafts continued to land and take off, carrying out offensive and defensive missions throughout the night and day.

“It is in full operational capability. And of course we are continuing to fight in Gaza as well, our forces are fighting in the central region camps and we’re going to call up two additional reserve brigades which will join the fighting.

“Even after this 24 hours and despite the operational success, we do not forget, not for one minute, the 133 hostages who are still being held captive in the Gaza Strip. Bringing back the hostages is our profound duty, we will not miss any opportunity to bring them back home.

“This is our responsibility. We maintain a high level of preparedness and alertness. The IDF is readily prepared for any developments, both in the offensive and defensive.”

Israel accuses Iran of ‘risking entire Middle East'

Sunday 14 April 2024 18:46 , Andy Gregory

Israel has accused Iran and its proxies of having “risked the entire Middle East” with its attack last night.

Speaking at a live press conference, IDF spokesperson Daniel Hagari said it followed “a very complicated and successful air fight in which the IDF, together with a very strong regional coalition, prevented and thwarted the Iranian attack.

“Iran and its proxies – [in] Iraq, Yemen, Hezbollah and Lebanon – have risked the entire Middle East and put it to a halt. Iran blocked yesterday the airspace of the countries in the region while it launched about 350 different kinds of launches.

“We are talking about 60 tonnes of warheads and explosives which could have created immense damage to every country in the region. The Iranian threat encountered [the] technological, operational and intel supremacy of the IDF, led by the Israeli air force.

“Dozens of fighter jets along with Israeli air defence systems, together with the regional coalition led by the US, Britain, France and additional countries from the region, we intercepted 99 per cent of the threats.

“This is the first time such an international coalition operates against the Iranian threat and its proxies from throughout the Middle East.”

G7 ‘stands ready’ to respond to further ‘destabilising initiatives’ by Iran

Sunday 14 April 2024 18:32 , Andy Gregory

The leaders of the G7 have said they “unequivocally condemn in the strongest terms Iran’s direct and unprecedented attack against Israel” and said they “stand ready to take further measures now and in response to further destabilising initiatives”.

In a statement, they said: “Iran fired hundreds of drones and missiles towards Israel. Israel, with the help of its partners, defeated the attack. We express our full solidarity and support to Israel and its people and reaffirm our commitment towards its security.

“With its actions, Iran has further stepped toward the destabilization of the region and risks provoking an uncontrollable regional escalation. This must be avoided. We will continue to work to stabilise the situation and avoid further escalation. In this spirit, we demand that Iran and its proxies cease their attacks, and we stand ready to take further measures now and in response to further destabilising initiatives.

We will also strengthen our cooperation to end the crisis in Gaza, including by continuing to work towards an immediate and sustainable ceasefire and the release of hostages by Hamas, and deliver increased humanitarian assistance to Palestinians in need.

Russia’s response to Iran attack falls short of Israeli expectations

Sunday 14 April 2024 18:29 , Andy Gregory

Russia has retorted spikily to the suggestion that Israel expected Moscow to condemn its ally Iran’s attack last night – with foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova, telling reporters: “Remind me, when was the last time Israel condemned at least one of Kyiv’s attacks on Russian regions?”

Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov, meanwhile, had a phone call with Iranian foreign minister Hossein Amirabdollahian on Sunday, with a read out of the call from the Russian ministry stating: “An further escalation of the situation in the region and dangerous new provocative actions may lead to an increase in tension.”

Moscow said it was extremely concerned by Iranian strikes on Israel and called on all parties to exercise restraint – but said tensions would remain high until the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians was resolved.

Russia noted that Tehran had said the attack was made within the right to self defence after Israel’s strike on the Iranian embassy compound in Damascus that Moscow condemned. Russia did not condemn the Iranian strikes on Israel.

Russia, which has close ties to Iran, accused the West of having blocked attempts in the United Nations Security Council to respond to the Israeli strike on the embassy compound.

“We have repeatedly warned that the numerous unresolved crises in the Middle East, primarily in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict zone, which are often fueled by irresponsible provocative actions, will lead to an increase in tension,” the ministry said.

Iran attack feels like ‘declaration of war’, says Israel’s president

Sunday 14 April 2024 18:15 , Andy Gregory

Iran’s attack feels like “a declaration of war”, Israel’s president Isaac Herzog has said, adding that Israel would exercise restraint.

“There is an empire of evil in Tehran, which has its proxies, led all over the region and [with] cells all over the world,” said Israel’s president, who largely holds a ceremonial role. “They’re spending billions of dollars undermining stability in the region.”

“We were attacked last night from four corners of the Middle East with proxies shooting at us, firing missiles and ballistic missiles, drones and cruise missiles. This is like a real war. I mean, this is a declaration of war,” he said, adding: “The last thing that Israel is seeking in this region since its creation is to go to war, we are seeking peace.”

Watch: Rishi Sunak confirms RAF shot down ‘a number’ of Iranian attack drones overnight

Sunday 14 April 2024 16:02 , Lucy Leeson

RAF jets shot down “a number of” Iranian drones, Rishi Sunak said as he warned the fallout would have been “hard to overstate” if missiles launched in Tehran’s unprecedented attack on Israel were not largely intercepted.

The prime minister called for “calm heads to prevail” following the overnight assault on Sunday (14 April) and ahead of a meeting of G7 leaders amid fears of further escalation in the event of a possible Israeli counter-strike.

Speaking to journalists in Downing Street, Mr Sunak confirmed RAF warplanes based in Syria and Iraq had been deployed to protect Israel, adding that lives had been saved “in neighbouring countries such as Jordan as well”.

White House spokesman John Kirby says president has been clear the US does not want war with Iran

Sunday 14 April 2024 15:10 , Athena Stavrou

White House spokesman John Kirby said on NBC’s Meet the Press that repelling the mass drone attack had been a “incredible military achievement” by Israel and its partners and had shown how Israel is not isolated on the world stage.

“Now, whether and how the Israelis will respond, that’s going to be up to them. We understand that and respect that. But the president’s been very clear: we don’t seek a war with Iran.”

The Islamic Republic’s mission to the United Nations said its actions were aimed at punishing “Israeli crimes”, but that it now “deemed the matter concluded”.

Iranian army chief of staff Major General Mohammad Bagheri warned on television that “our response will be much larger than tonight’s military action if Israel retaliates against Iran” and told Washington its bases could also be attacked if it helped Israel retaliate.

Parliament must have its say on Iranian drone and missile attacks, say Lib Dems

Sunday 14 April 2024 14:51 , Athena Stavrou

Responding to the Iranian drone and missile attack on Israel last night, the Liberal Democrat Defence Spokesperson Richard Foord MP said: “Liberal Democrats condemn in the strongest terms possible Iran’s attack on Israel. We support the action by the RAF to intercept Iranian attack drones.

It is right that the UK calls for calm heads to prevail; leaders must exercise restraint and work towards a lasting peace.

“It is a crucial convention that Parliament should have an opportunity to approve military action, even when that action has happened already. The Government should uphold that principle by holding a debate and a vote in the House of Commons as soon as possible.”

Humza Yousaf calls for political and diplomatic solutions

Sunday 14 April 2024 14:22 , Athena Stavrou

Scotland’s First Minister Humza Yousaf has called on the international community to “demand” players in the region abide by UN Security Council resolutions.

Speaking to Sky News, Mr Yousaf said he “condemns” Iran’s attempted attack on Israel as he has “all and every regional escalation”.

“There is not going to be a military solution to the conflict we see in the Middle East, there is only going to be a political and diplomatic solution,” he said.

Senate Republican leader calls for Biden to lead ‘international effort’ against Tehran

Sunday 14 April 2024 01:29 , Andrew Feinberg

Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell, the upper chamber’s top Republican, has issued a statement urging President Joe Biden to “match words with actions” when it comes to what Mr Biden has described as America’s “ironclad” commitment to Israeli security.

“President Biden must lead an international effort to impose sufficient costs on Tehran to compel an end to its aggression and terror, both on Israeli soil and — as demonstrated with today’s IRGC assault on a commercial shipping vessel — around the region. Iran’s leaders must know the things they value most are at risk,” he said.

He also suggested that Mr Biden should back off his insistence that Israel allow more humanitarian aid into Gaza, writing that he “must also give Israel the time, space, and support it deserves to finish the job against Hamas” because “Tehran and its proxies are emboldened when they see divisions between the US and Israel”.

Mr McConnell’s statement also calls on the House to take action on the national security appropriations bill supported by Mr Biden, which the Senate has already passed.

“It will provide overdue lethal assistance to Ukraine and equip vulnerable allies and partners in Asia to deter the PRC. And it will make urgent investments in our own defence industrial base,” he said.

“We cannot hope to deter conflict without demonstrating resolve and investing seriously in American strength. The Commander-in-Chief and the Congress must discharge our fundamental duties without delay. The consequences of failure are clear, devastating, and avoidable.”

“But this is not a war that our nation wants. Iranians have made it clear: the criminal mafia occupying Iran does not represent our nation, our values, or our aspirations. The path to lasting peace and security in the Middle East is to support the people of Iran who are fighting to reclaim our country and our rightful place in the world. I call on our friends in the region and Western powers to embrace this lasting solution for our region and to empower the Iranian people, their allies for peace,” he added.
