Police have imposed restrictions on gatherings ahead of the vote in the militarized region, while opposition parties have said that some of their workers were arrested, which police deny.

“If they (Bharatiya Janata Party) say there is no commotion, violence and no boycott in the state, then I want to ask why our party workers have been detained for the past two days,” former Jammu and Kashmir state Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah, president of the National Conference party, told media after casting his ballot in Srinagar.

Srinagar, the main city of the troubled Kashmir Valley, is also voting for the first time since Modi's 2019 move to remove its semi-autonomy.
